Wonder Woman premiered in cinemas June 2nd and is receiving wide recognition for how great it is, to the point where Warner execs are stunned that it has already earned over $103.3 million in the US. Plus, it has an 8.2/10 rating on IMDB. So, is the movie all that? Stop here if you have not seen the movie yet.
As you may already know, the theme of powerful women cuts across in the movie. Starting from the beginning of the movie when we get a glimpse into the life of Diana, Princess of the Amazons (Gal Gadot), growing up on Themyscira – where they are all Amazon women and no men. From a very early age, we see that Diana has the urge to learn how to fight, which sets the stage for her courageousness and rebellion which is portrayed throughout the movie. In my mind, it serves as a reminder to all women to keep being brave and even rebellious when need be.
The most powerful scenes are the fight scenes on the beach. I am used to all male battles, especially when our favorite comic book heroes are brought to life. But an all female battle scene – hell yes to that! Plus, the action-packed jumps in slow motion were amazing.
The beautiful Robin Wright plays General Antiope, who leads her warriors into battle, and she does a great job of this, but I would have loved to see a bit more character build up on her too. The references made about how she is the greatest Amazon warrior could serve as a nice flashback story.
The love story between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor was skillfully brought out. It was obvious that he was smitten by Diana, but during the movie, I still wondered whether it would just be a tag team friendship, or something more.
The plot twist at the end that Sir Patrick Morgan was the enemy (as the God of Truth) didn’t really resonate. It seemed a little out of place, but I got over that anyway.
In summary, I’d also give the movie an 8/10, did you watch the movie? What did you like or not like about it?
